* Szklarska Poręba is located on the very edge of the two range of the West Sudetes: the Karkonosze Mountains and the Jizera Mountains; it is an excellent place for active holiday for both families and for sports enthusiasts. The town is associated with the very popular sports in our country: downhill and cross-country skiing; it offers many opportunities to try less known sports, which are gaining new fans. The slopes of Mount Szrenica – one of the highest peaks of the Karkonosze Mountains – tower over the city and it is a fantastic place to try skitouring. On ski routes with varied difficulty levels you can go skiing or snowboarding even in April. In 2010, the new cableway – „Karkonosze Express” was put into service. This is the longest and most modern cableway of this type in Poland. The Jizera Mountains are well known to the fans of cross-country skiing. Here, Bieg Piastówthe oldest and largest mass event in Poland, has been held for 35 years. Here, the Piast Race Association prepares and maintains 100 km of trails. And thanks to the amazing microclimate, snow cover stays here from autumn to spring. This land gained recognition of the International Ski Federation, which granted Szklarska Poręba the rights to the organizations of the World Cup in cross-country skiing in 2012. Szklarska Poręba, as one of the few Polish towns has excellent conditions for dog sledding. Another advantage is the specific alpine climate of our region which makes the northern breed dogs feel here like in their natural environment. In March 2003, for the first time in Poland and on the Jakuszyce routes in Szklarska Poręba, the trail sled dog race in the rank of the European Championship WSA was held. The most important characteristic of the spirit of the discipline are people and their best friends – dogs. Many people associate our town with the cycling capital of Poland. There are more than 400 km cycle routes of varying difficulty. They are prepared for both children and for professional cyclists. Each year, the biggest cycling event in Poland – Bike Action Festival is held here. Szklarska Poręba and its surrounding area is also well known to climbing enthusiasts. On numerous mountain trails you can find tourists wandering with poles. Nordic walking is gaining more and more followers. This is a great form of active rest for anyone, regardless of their age, health or weight. And routes around Szklarska Poręba are a great place to practice this sport. Thematic trails have been created for those who want to look at tourism from a somewhat different perspective.
